March Current Events

B. Read up on the news events behind these photos. On your blog AND on Blackboard, post a picture that you think reflects the biggest news story in MARCH. Label the photographer/publication.

"Momoko Onodera prays at an evacuation center as she talks about her husband who died in the tsunami on March 18 in Kesennuma, Japan. A potential humanitarian crisis looms as nearly half a million people who have been displaced by the disaster continue to suffer a shortage of food and fuel as freezing weather conditions set in."

C. In BLACKBOARD, upload your chosen photo, copy/paste these 10 questions below and answer the questions about the photo you chose in complete sentences. I have to be able to SEE your photo!
1. What feeling does this photograph create in you, the viewer?
This photo creates a feeling of curiosity and compassion. One views this photo and feels sad for this woman, but also has to wonder why she is prompted to pray in the first place. Additionally, her chaotic background adds interest to the content of the photo.

2. What story do you think this photograph tells the viewer? Does it capture something that would be hard to convey in words?
This photo communicates the incessant dejection of Japanese civilians just like Momoko Onodera, who is both suffering a loss and supporting those who have as well. The pained look on her face as she prays would be difficult to communicate through words. Sometimes a person has to see the result of destruction in order to understand it.
3. Who or what is the subject of this photograph?
The subject of this photograph is an older woman praying at an evacuation center, donning a mask to prevent the intake of foreign particles threatening citizens as a result of the earthquake.
4. Is the lighting natural or artificial? What time of day is it?
It is unclear what time of day this is, since the photo was taken indoors. It could be concluded, however, that the picture was taken either in the early morning or in the evening, judging by the angle of the sunlight seeping through the windows.
5. If it is a color photo, what colors stand out? If it is black and white, what is the effect?
The warm colors produced by the sunlight act as kind of spotlight on the woman.
6. What part or parts are out of focus, if any? What is the effect?
The woman is in focus as she prays, while the cluttered background of people and clothing remain unfocused. This forces the viewer not only to consider the significance of her praying, but also to  see the feeling of aloneness
7. How is the picture composed? Is the subject centered? Is the "rule of thirds" followed?
The rule of thirds is followed in this picture instead of being centered.
8. What strikes you most about the photo? Why do you think that is?
The way this woman seems to be alone even though one could deduce (from the background) that she is not.
9. What is the background for this image?
A shelter, littered with sleeping bags and clothing sprawled all across the floor, serves as the primary background for this photo.
10. Is this photo timely? Does it have a timeless quality? Both? Might it become iconic? Why or why not?
Now that I see it, it kind of does have a timeless and iconic quality. People have found themselves in situations like this since the beginning of civilization, which I think is why people may easily identify with this woman. They see themselves in this woman when times are difficult and they resort to prayer for consolation and strength.
